Let’s face it, life is busy. Juggling your daily schedule is challenging enough. Add in children, a significant other, and managing your health, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for chaos.
You want to get healthier, but where can you find the time in a schedule that’s already jam packed? Well now you can with telehealth. UR Medicine Employee Wellness is using telehealth* to bring personal wellness coaching to you. Telehealth takes health management to a personal level, enabling you to schedule care on your terms at a time and location that meets your busy lifestyle.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth is secure, two-way video conferencing that is web-based and accessible using your smartphone, tablet, or any computer with a webcam. Using telehealth to manage your health is available without leaving the privacy and convenience of your home, work, or other location. Want to improve a health condition, improve your diet or start an exercise routine, but can’t fit it into your work day? Just schedule your personal wellness coaching session at a time and location that works for you using telehealth. See how telehealth made it possible for University of Rochester employee Paul Soto to improve his health.
Paul's Telehealth Story
When Paul began experiencing lower back pain, his desire to do something about it wasn’t the issue. The biggest problem was finding the time. “After I completed my PHA and biometric screening, I received the outreach email about the lower back pain program, but because I work off site and the nature of my job, my schedule never allowed me to commit to the program. But then came telehealth, and all that changed,” said Paul.
Paul has been with the University of Rochester for seven years. Throughout that time, he knew about personal wellness coaching for lower back pain, but never enrolled. So why did he enroll now? Simple. Telehealth gave him the access and convenience he needed to manage his health. “Telehealth made managing my health and improving my lower back pain possible. I could meet with my wellness coach and exercise specialist from home, my desk – basically anywhere and anytime it was convenient for me,” Paul said.
Using telehealth, Paul had face-to-face, half hour meetings with his wellness coach, and exercise specialist throughout the program. Working as a team, they addressed his concerns, barriers to achieving his goals, and provided him with the information and education he needed to improve his lower back pain.
“Paul and I used telehealth for all of our coaching sessions,” said Ging Hoang, BSN, RN, Wellness Coach. “The two-way video conferencing allowed Paul to show me his equipment, stretches he was working on, and his work set up. I was able to share educational materials over the Zoom platform, and it was as if we were interacting in the same room. It really hit me how telehealth truly breaks down the barrier of distance when Paul and I ran into each other while working off site, and we instantly recognized one other."
To follow up his coaching sessions, Paul also met with Katie Niebuhr, Exercise Specialist. Via telehealth, Katie helped him create an exercise plan to strengthen his lower back muscles. “With telehealth, I could evaluate Paul’s form with his stretches, and conduct a simple exercise test to find any weaknesses or imbalances that may be contributing to his lower back pain,” Katie said. “As a result, I recommended proper stretches and exercises to help with his strength and flexibility to alleviate the lower back pain he was experiencing.”
Through personal wellness coaching for lower back pain, Paul learned how to make changes to his exercise routine, sitting habits, and how to incorporate stretching exercises into his day. These changes helped relieve his lower back pain, and get him back to his active lifestyle. After graduating from the program, Paul is feeling much better and resuming his normal activities. Would he recommend telehealth? “Without a doubt,” Paul said. “It’s a great tool that ensures access to care, removes all geographic barriers, and allows providers to continue to deliver medicine of the highest order.”
